Based on prior experience, I suspected I would like this album. The one that disappointed.... the one that didn’t sell as much.....blah....blah....blah. Like Rush’s Caress of Steel, or a newer example in Opeth’s Heritage, Crystal Ball is one of those prog albums that everyone dismissed, but I really like. This isn’t as good as Styx’s next epic album, The Grand Illusion, but it still really shines. This is the first album with Tommy Shaw, and the band showcases his talents on the title song and Mademoiselle. There is also a good Dennis DeYoung song: This Old Man. It may be a somewhat forgotten album, but if you are like me and just now delving into old school prog, check this out.
